Community pharmacy AF awareness with KLAV

Royal Association of Limburg Pharmacists (KLAV)

Pharmacists invited customers to use FibriCheck for a week; of 110 participants, 17.3% showed possible arrhythmias and one went on to stroke-preventing surgery.

Deze casestudy is voorlopig alleen in het Engels beschikbaar.

Objective

To investigate the potential of pharmacist-delivered atrial fibrillation education and remote screening within community pharmacies.

Approach

Participating pharmacists invited customers to use FibriCheck over a 7-day period, measuring twice daily and whenever they experienced symptoms. Consolidated end-reports were emailed to the user with advice to consult a GP where atrial fibrillation was detected.

Outcome

In a small pilot region, 110 people participated. A total of 19 (17.3%) possible arrhythmias were detected, 3.6% of them possible AF. All possible AF cases were advised to see a doctor, leading to further investigation, timely treatment and, in one case, surgical intervention to prevent future strokes. The project shows the important role pharmacists can play in timely AF detection.
