MUMC+ and insurer VGZ lead the way on reimbursed remote monitoring

Objective

To make remote heart-rhythm monitoring a reimbursed, scalable standard of care.

Approach

Employing FibriCheck to monitor patients’ heart rate and rhythm remotely in the TeleCheck-AF project, Maastricht University Medical Centre+ began large-scale teleconsultations for many of its heart patients during the pandemic. Since then, this approach has become the standard at MUMC+ for patients with atrial fibrillation and other supraventricular rhythm disorders, reducing cost and increasing efficiency.

Outcome

The clear health-economic case drew the attention of Dutch health insurer VGZ, which agreed to reimburse FibriCheck. With the Dutch Healthcare Authority honouring the agreement, the model can be scaled to other hospitals and medical centres, an important step forward for the implementation of digital healthcare.
