Detecting AF in patients with COPD
Of 90 COPD patients monitored with FibriCheck for a week, possible AF was detected in 5 and later confirmed, enabling guideline-based management.
Objective
Because COPD patients have an increased risk of developing atrial fibrillation, this study evaluated whether PPG technology could be an accurate and effective way to remotely monitor heart rate and rhythm in this group.
Approach
Patients with a confirmed COPD diagnosis and no prior AF, all with access to a smartphone, monitored their heart rhythm with FibriCheck for 7 days. Where AF was detected, the patient was invited for a confirmatory ECG.
Outcome
Of the 90 participants, FibriCheck detected possible AF in 5. An in-office 12-lead ECG immediately confirmed AF in 3, and the other 2 were diagnosed with paroxysmal AF after prolonged monitoring. This led to guideline-based AF management, making FibriCheck a feasible option for the cross-condition management of COPD patients.
