EHRA-PATHS consortium An EU Horizon 2020 research project building interdisciplinary, patient-centred care pathways for atrial fibrillation patients over 65 who live with several other conditions at once.
The challenge
Most people with atrial fibrillation (AF) are over 65 and live with several other conditions at the same time. Care today is often fragmented, treating each disease on its own rather than the whole person. That makes treatment harder to coordinate and can leave important problems unaddressed.
The project
EHRA-PATHS stands for “Addressing multimorbidity in elderly atrial fibrillation patients through interdisciplinary, patient-centred, systematic care pathways.” It aims to move AF care from a single-disease approach to one that considers multimorbidity, polypharmacy and sex, so treatment becomes more holistic, inclusive and personalised.
The project is coordinated by Antwerp University Hospital (Prof. Hein Heidbuchel and Lien Desteghe) together with the European Society of Cardiology, and runs across 11 countries with 16 partners.
Funding
EHRA-PATHS is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement no. 945260). It has a budget of €6 million over 66 months, organised into 8 work packages and 33 deliverables. The project estimates that better, coordinated care for this group could reduce European healthcare costs by up to €20 billion per year.
