RACE-9: active surveillance as a treatment strategy

Maastricht University Medical Center

FibriCheck's telemonitoring guides real-time rate control in a watchful-waiting approach to acute AF, without additional hardware.

Objective

To evaluate whether a watchful-waiting approach to acute atrial fibrillation is at least as beneficial as routine care consisting of early or delayed cardioversion.

Approach

In this multi-centre randomised controlled trial initiated by Maastricht University Medical Center, rate-control medication is administered to relieve symptoms while FibriCheck’s telemonitoring infrastructure guides rate control in real time, without additional hardware. After discharge from the emergency department, patients keep using FibriCheck for four weeks to monitor for recurrences and guide ongoing therapy.

Outcome

Because FibriCheck’s platform is scalable and compatible with a wide range of consumer devices, a watchful-waiting approach has real potential to adapt therapy to regular, real-time data and improve outcomes for atrial fibrillation outpatients.
