Combining FibriCheck with an ECG patch to create an end-to-end remote AF detection pathway

Key benefits

Awareness of AF raised for 10 430 patients at risk

High usability with 92% of patients saying that FibriCheck was easy to use

20% of identified AF patient were asymptomatic and would not have been identified via the traditional routes

How does it work?

The University of Essex evaluated the remote AF (atrial fibrillation) detection pilot in West Suffolk (UK), an end-to-end pathway for AF within a population of high-risk patients

In this pilot, more than 10 000 patients at risk of AF were contacted to participate in the study. Those who joined were asked to use the FibriCheck app to measure their heart rate and rhythm and to track the symptoms they are experiencing. In cases where FibriCheck detected AF, patients received a wearable Zio XT biosensor ECG patch to confirm AF diagnosis.

  • By inviting patients via text message, this pilot raised awareness for AF with 10 430 patients at risk
  • 92% of patients said that FibriCheck was easy to monitor their heart rhythm. Patients were overall satisfied with the app
  • The remote AF detection pathway was perceived as successful by both the patients participating and the professionals involved

The scalability of this pilot project could have a significant impact on heart healthcare and the costs associated with it. Early detection and diagnosis of AF can lead to early treatment. By providing appropriate anticoagulant management of AF in all eligible patients, an estimated 4551 strokes could be averted yearly, which translates into £97 million savings in NHS and social care costs or £259 million savings in societal costs in the first year.
