Some weeks you bounce out of bed every morning. Other weeks, even with the same amount of sleep, you feel like you are dragging yourself through each day. Your HRV tells you the story behind this. Morning HRV gives you insights into how recovered you are today. HRV-fluctuation tells you something different: how steady that recovery has been all week.
What does your HRV-fluctuation say about your week?
HRV-fluctuation takes your morning HRV readings from the past several days and turns the ups and downs between them into a single steadiness score, shown as a percentage.
A low, steady HRV-fluctuation means your body has been absorbing changes in your daily life smoothly. It means that your mornings have been consistent with each other. This can be achieved by routine: a steady bedtime, staying away from alcohol, training loads that do not swing between doing nothing and doing too much. None of this requires perfection. It requires fewer surprises for your nervous system to absorb.
A high or rising HRV-fluctuation means your system has been knocked around more than usual: recovery has been uneven, and it is worth looking at what changed in your sleep, stress, or training this week. Other factors that may affect your HRV-fluctuation include (but are not limited to) alcohol consumption, illness, and jet lag. With FibriCheck, we encourage you to discover what lifestyle choices impact your recovery and its consistency most.
How FibriCheck measures this parameter
HRV-fluctuation takes your morning HRV values from the past 7 days and measures how much they’ve changed. It is expressed as a percentage. HRV-fluctuation can only be calculated if you’ve taken at least 5 valid morning HRV readings that week. It is not a new measurement type, it is consistency made visible: a second layer of insight built entirely on mornings you have already logged.
How HRV-fluctuation appears in the app
HRV-fluctuation stays locked until you have 5 valid morning HRV readings in the past 7 days. The empty state in the app explains exactly what is missing, so it doubles as a nudge to keep your morning habit going. Once unlocked, you can see your HRV-fluctuation percentage for this week. If you’ve been measuring for a longer period, you can see the trend of your HRV-fluctuation over the weeks, to see whether life has been getting smoother or bumpier over time.
What else can you check with FibriCheck Health?
FibriCheck Health gives you three other insights, all built from the same underlying PPG signal:
- Heart Rate Variability (HRV): this reflects how your body is coping with stressors. A higher-than-usual number means you’re well rested and ready to go; a lower one is your body telling you it’s still recovering from stress, poor sleep, hard exercise, or that glass of wine last night. Also useful if you work out and want to know whether today is a push day or a rest day.
- Heart age: a slower mirror. While morning HRV reacts to short-term changes, heart age reflects months of accumulated habits, blood pressure, and other factors, distilled into one number that shows whether your heart is behaving younger or older than your real age.
- Resting heart rate: how many times your heart beats per minute at rest. Over the long run, a lower resting rate reflects better fitness. Day to day, it’s a recovery signal: a morning that’s a few beats above your normal usually means your body is under strain from poor sleep, stress, alcohol, or oncoming illness.
Start building your number
HRV-fluctuation is the one insight you earn rather than unlock instantly. Here is how:
- Take your morning HRV measurement between 5 and 10 AM, as close to waking as you can manage.
- Keep measuring. You will need 5 valid morning-HRV measurements within the last 7 days before HRV-fluctuation appears, so a couple of missed or off-window mornings will not lock you out, but consistent measuring remains key here.
- Once unlocked, check back weekly rather than daily. This is a week-level number, watching it every morning will not tell you much that morning HRV does not already show. Over time, you can see whether life is getting smoother or bumpier.
No new hardware, no extra steps, just the measurement you already take.
