Remote monitoring with PPG following electrical cardioversion to treat atrial fibrillation

Key benefits

Remote PPG monitoring is highly effective in avoiding unnecessary patient re-attendance following DCCV, and provides significant cost, time, and environmental savings.

Results suggest that PPG monitoring could be utilized more frequently —i.e. as first-line follow-up following DCCV and in preference to a 12-lead ECG—in most cases.

How does it work?

Patients who underwent a direct current cardioversion (DCCV) were followed up with a 2-week 12-lead ECG or with PPG (FibriCheck). Patients followed up by FibriCheck received an information sheet including a QR code to activate the application on their smartphone. They installed the app themselves or were assisted by a nurse. The results could easily be consulted by the involved healthcare providers. This approach proved to be feasible and safe, acceptable to patients with good compliance, and significantly reduces costs for the healthcare organization and patients. Patients also benefit from saving travel time, and environmental impact through CO2 emissions was reduced as well.
