We are proud to announce that we’ve been selected as the winner of the WSIS Healthy Ageing Innovation Prize 2023. We have been awarded this international prize in recognition of our technology’s ability to provide an innovative and effective solution to some of the challenges posed by an ageing society.

With this prize, the WSIS Forum in collaboration with the Global Coalition of Ageing wants to highlight the importance of sustainable solutions in an increasing global population of elderly. It’s important that this population is provided with innovative tools to help them enhance their freedom and independence so that they can stay active for a longer time, which improves their overall quality of life.

Within this increasingly older population, atrial fibrillation is a condition that may cause serious consequences such as stroke. It’s important to note that the elderly have a much higher probability of being confronted with this condition. According to the guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology, the chances of suffering from atrial fibrillation increase from 1 in 4 to 1 in 3 for individuals of European ancestry at index age of 55 years.

To avoid the consequences of atrial fibrillation, it’s of vital importance that the condition gets detected and treated as soon as possible. By doing so, up to 75% of all strokes caused by atrial fibrillation can be prevented. On the other hand, it’s also important to provide users with the ability to monitor themselves after they have been diagnosed with the condition.

FibriCheck can be used both to detect and monitor atrial fibrillation. With our innovative PPG-technology, our users can easily follow up on their heart rhythm, so atrial fibrillation can be detected early on. Our technology empowers users from all ages to take control of their heart rhythm, and makes the clinical pathway for health care providers and hospitals more efficient at the same time. Physicians are able to use FibriCheck to decide on treatment strategies effectively, and also to follow up closely and in real-time whether treatment was effective or not.

At FibriCheck, we’re aware of the fact that the use of smartphone technology may be challenging for older populations. As we want our app to be easy to use for people from all age categories, we’ve paid special attention to the needs of the older population. With inclusivity in mind, we continuously strive to finetune the usability of our app. We also strive to support the needs of the elderly by offering instruction videos and in-app messages that help our users activate their prescription, perform their first measurement, or understand their results.
