Artificial intelligence in healthcare

The power and potential of artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly important in all sectors, as it is a growing field with new possibilities emerging every day. As AI algorithms and technologies become more advanced, they can be implemented to optimise processes, make predictions, and provide a personalised approach to already existing systems. This ultimately leads to higher efficiency and better outcomes.

Through machine learning, algorithms are fed and trained on vast amounts of data. This allows AI to continuously improve, grow smarter and get better at making predictions and decisions on its own. Through this process, AI has become capable of mimicking intelligent human behaviour.

AI is constantly evolving, creating novel challenges and unknown frontiers. As with any emerging technology, AI is a tool which includes a few risks like misinformation, privacy issues and biassed opinions. This highlights the importance of diverse data sets to train AI systems and the need for human supervision.

The rise of artificial intelligence in cardiology

Cardiology is one of the fields in which AI continued to realise significant impact in recent years, by making healthcare delivery more efficient and improving patient outcomes. AI’s achievements in cardiology include, but are not limited to:

  • Better analysis of patient data to identify high risk patients and to provide them with personalised treatment plans. This leads to early detection and optimisation of treatment strategies, which ultimately improves disease outcomes.
  • Improved analysis of medical imaging, such as echocardiograms, angiograms, RX and CT scans. Here, AI algorithms are detecting subtle changes in the heart’s structures before they become visible to the human eye, enabling physicians to detect cardiovascular diseases early on.
  • Enabling people to monitor their heart rhythm remotely with nothing more than their smartphone. With the results of these measurements, which are analysed in real-time via AI algorithms, users are empowered and given clear insights into their cardiac function. On top of that, providers are informed as well. This significantly improves outcomes through timely detection.

FibriCheck is powered by artificial intelligence

At FibriCheck, we also use innovative AI algorithms to enhance the future of cardiac care. Our algorithm enables our users to measure their heart rhythm using PPG-technology, thereby making it possible to detect and monitor a variety of heart rhythm conditions such as atrial fibrillation. This facilitates early intervention and treatment, thereby avoiding the grave consequences associated with the 75% of preventable AF stroke cases.

The use of FibriCheck’s algorithm can also improve treatment strategy, by enabling physicians to choose the approach best suited to the patient’s needs. Empowered by their own measurement data, users can share their medical grade assessments with their provider, which supports shared care decision making.

After therapeutic intervention, for example by means of ablation, our AI algorithm can be used to monitor the patient’s condition post-procedure. This way, the effectiveness and possible regression of symptoms and/or heart rhythm disorders can be measured.

Our algorithm is constantly improving

We increasingly receive more data, and more and more clinical studies are being conducted. This measurement data is being used to make the algorithm incrementally better. Intervention from our clinical reviewers provide the necessary oversight to assure confidence towards users and providers. While we’re taught to view errors as mistakes, the AI learns from them and improves.

AI in the field of medicine is evolving at an unprecedented pace. At FibriCheck, we make sure to continuously improve our solution by staying on top of the latest developments in the field and by training our algorithms on use cases, clinical studies and our exponentially growing database.

Although we strongly believe in the power of AI tools, we also recognise the importance of human oversight. For this reason, our solution is backed by a team of data scientists who ensure that the algorithm functions the way it’s intended to. This is in addition to our team of medically qualified reviewers who oversee and assess our user measurements.

How our partners are implementing our technology

By implementing FibriCheck, adopters can take confidence in the knowledge backed by a CE-certified and FDA approved medical device that has been clinically validated by over 50 studies. As we are committed to excellence, we strive towards continuous improvement and evaluation by our teams of data scientists, clinicians, developers and engineers to name a few. Our technology is fully compliant with regulatory requirements and GDPR standards, so that our partners can leverage our certifications to speed up their compliance process.

Today we’re transforming care and treatment outcomes, for users with and without a prescription. Whether you’re looking to digitally transform routine practice or seamlessly integrate our functionality into your own solution, FibriCheck takes a bespoke, co-designed approach to every partner collaboration.
